Darold in Vrakas Dance experience: Darold has been doing Greek dancing for 20 years and teaching it since 1992. He is also the leader of our performing group, the Greek Village Dancers of the Monterey Peninsula.
Favorite dance: Hassapiko.
Costume seen here: The traditional Cretan costume is fashioned from blue felt. The most distinctive feature is the vraka (wide baggy trousers). The sleeveless waistcoat is called a yileki. The zounari, a long red sash, is wrapped around the waist and a silver knife tucked in it. The kiousteki, an ornamental chain, is an important accessory. The boots are called stivalia. A black fringed kerchief is tied around the head. The costume seen here was imported from Crete.
Non-dance hobbies: Home wine making, grandchildren, travel, attending theatre and opera.
Profession: Retired chemistry teacher.
