"How-to" Introductory Materials.


Couple Karagouna

Choreographed version of the traditional Karagouna dance, taught by Maxine Myer.
Music: "Odeon" 45 RPM record, HGRA 847
Rhythm: S Q Q, 2/4 time, 16 beats per pattern.
Men dance in line behind women; can be equal numbers or one more woman.
Arms relaxed with bent elbows (W hold)
Lead man and woman hold R hands; if even numbers, last man and woman hold L hands.


Wiggle Step:
    R, L, R, close, wiggle R foot, step onto R and wiggle L, close
    L, R, L, close, wiggle L foot, step onto L and wiggle R, close
Repeat 4 times

Zig Zag Step:
    Pivot on R, draw L to R (8 counts)
Repeat eight times

Syrto:
    Basic Syrto pattern (12 counts)
Repeat two times

Flirty Step:
    R, L, R, turn hips to L and touch L heel
    Turn to R, step on L, touch R toe to back of circle
        Touch R toe to front of circle
        Touch R toe to back of circle
Repeat four times

Swish Step:
    2 walking steps R, L, close with knees together,
    making a circle with knees L to R (body down, knees kept bent)
Repeat four times

Syrto:
    Basic Syrto pattern (12 counts) Repeat two times

Hop Hop Step:
    R, L, hop, hop on L while turning 180 degrees to L
    Step on R with L foot up while turning 180 degrees back into LOD
    Step on L
Repeat five times

Transition:

    Women: step in LOD onto R, close, step R, close
    Men: after last hop, hop, step forward on the second R
    to the left of the woman immediately in front; close
    (men and women form a continuous line, woman in lead)
    Hold: interlocked arms and fingers

Opa Step:
    Step into center of circle on L, R leg extended with heel on floor;
    Say "Opa!" on the first and third repititions.
    Step back with R and together, step L and close, step R, close
Repeat four times

Change back to W hold

Point Step:
    R, L, R, pivot on R and touch L heel to ground
    L, R, L, pivot on L and touch R heel to ground
Repeat four times

Dip Step ( music changes):
    R dip with L foot behind
    Step R, face L with L heel on floor
    Step on L, hop 3 times, with R foot in air
    Weight on L with R heel to R
Repeat four times

Finish:
    L hop, hop
    R hop, hop
Repeat four times

End: bring arms down to sides, then swing hands up to shoulder height.
