Costume seen here: The Naupactos Sunday outfit is in use throughout Roumeli, Thessaly, and Moreas. It includes the type of foustanella used as a model for the Evzon uniform of the Greek Palace Guards. The foustanella is a richly pleated short skirt, each soft pleat made of a gore. The foustanella has always been made by special tailors, such as professional costumer Mary Jane Skopos of Fair Oaks, California, who crafted this costume specifically for Zorba. The short jacket with sleeves thrown over the shoulders is called a fermeli. It is usually dark blue (red is common also), and always is trimmed with black or colored cords called hartsa. The graceful pompon shoes, called tsaroukia, and the flowing, swirling foustanella make this an especially graceful costume for dancing.
Non-dance hobbies: Greek language and culture, reading, travel, photography, collecting earrings, & WebMastering this site!
Profession: Belly Dancer
Quote: "Dance 'till you drop!"
